What a 50KB photograph has to survive
A signature only has to remain readable. A photograph has a harder job: it is the image a person at a verification desk will hold up against your face, and it may be printed on an admit card, so it has to stay recognisable through both compression and a low-resolution print. That changes what you should be willing to trade away.
In practice this means resolution is worth protecting more than absolute sharpness. Mild compression noise across a face barely affects recognition, because the features a human matches on — the proportions and spacing of eyes, nose and mouth — are large-scale structure that survives compression well. Blur from aggressive downscaling attacks exactly that structure, which is why this tool holds pixel dimensions as long as it can and lowers quality first.
Crop before you compress, never after
Compressing and then cropping wastes most of the work. The encoder spends your entire budget describing the whole frame, including the background you are about to discard, and then you throw that away and are left with a small crop that has been compressed far harder than it needed to be.
Do it the other way round. Crop to the head-and-shoulders framing your form specifies, then compress the cropped image to the target. The full budget now goes to the part of the picture that matters, and you will typically end up with a visibly better photograph at the same file size — often dramatically so if the original was a full-body shot.
Read the specification, not just the size limit
File size is only one of several rules, and it is rarely the one that gets applications rejected. Most boards also specify pixel dimensions, an aspect ratio, a background colour, how much of the frame the face must occupy, and whether the photograph must carry a printed date. Meeting the 50KB limit while failing the dimension requirement gets you no further than failing both.
The specifications also differ between boards and change between cycles, so a checklist from a forum post two years ago is not a reliable guide. Read the current notification for the exam you are actually sitting, note every requirement before you start, and do the size step last — it is the only one you can always fix without re-taking the photograph.
Minimum sizes, and why undershooting is a real risk
Some portals reject files that are too small as well as too large, on the reasoning that a very small file indicates a scan too poor to verify anyone against. A tool that hits your maximum by a wide margin — handing back 8KB against a 50KB limit — can therefore fail you at the other end, and the error message rarely explains which limit you missed.
Because this tool deliberately uses as much of the available budget as it can rather than stopping at the first size that fits, the result normally sits just under the maximum and comfortably clear of any minimum. If your form states a minimum, check the reported output size before uploading.
